Municipal roadblocks continue to plague rental development – what can be done?

David Goodman is interviewed on Roundhouse Radio 98.3 Vancouver on the current state of the rental apartment market and discusses the municipal roadblocks that continue to plague the development of much needed rental stock in the City of Vancouver.

The Goodman Report has been tracking rental apartment sales since the early 80’s. As an industry insider for over forty years, David explains the bigger story – the dire shortage of rentals in not just Vancouver, but throughout Metro Vancouver.

“Typically we saw 1-2% vacancy rates and that gives some breathing room and tenants have a chance to rent something. Now, most tenants who would like to perhaps move up or move down are really caught in a bind. If they leave, they have a hard time finding anything else to rent. We’re now looking at 0.5 or 0.6% – it’s a very unhealthy number.”

What can be done?

David offers insights into the frustrating rental development process and what the City can do to make a real difference.
